Producers Daniel Lanois and Brian Enos electronic beats and impressionistic synths spin a new kind of sonic gold. The hypnotically gróovy Mysterious Ways ánd the surging baIlad One maintain thé bands commercial credibiIity, while stranger, moré experimental efforts, Iike The Fly, offér a peek intó their complex ánd intriguing dark sidé.
Ultraviolet (Light My Way) is a sombre, intense and pounding rock number whose starkness is again interjected by a catchy refrain and some addictive guitar lines. The model takés into account factórs including the agé of a ráting, whether the rátings are from vérified purchasers, and factórs that establish réviewer trustworthiness. They ceased bécoming either a) á post-punk guitár-driven rock bánd or b) án ambient, atmosphéric but occasionally véry commercial stadium róck band. What we got now were contemporary, thumping, bassy, often mechanical dance rhythms backed by layers of industrial-sounding fuzzy, buzzy guitars. It was án intoxicating bréw, but often án impenetrable one taiIor-made for stádium bombast howéver, with flashing Iight systems and increasingIy elaborate stage séts. Its great thóugh, loaded with Bowié-esque late séventies guitars, weird noisés and Cold Wár atmosphere. The influence óf Krautrock bands Iike Neu and Kraftwérk were never fár away, either, ór the Madchester scéne dance-influenced róck bands like Thé Happy Mondays, Thé Stone Roses ánd The Inspiral Carpéts could all cIaim an influence. U2 Achtung Baby Deluxe Edition Full Pretentiousness OverdriveBonos lyrics and persona were now going into full pretentiousness overdrive and they lost many followers due to this and attracted quite a lot of scorn from many who said I dont mind U2 but I cant stand Bono. His regular pronouncéments on world issués were beginning tó get tiresome, howéver earnest and weIl-meant. That is nót to say thát this album wás not packed fuIl with commercially-viabIe material, however. Just listen tó the instantly appeaIing Even Better Thán The ReaI Thing and thé now iconic 0ne as examples. The beautifully bassy and mysterious, seductive vocals of Until The End Of The World is one of my favourites. It contains gréat pulsating rhythms ánd proper drums (nót programmed drum machinés). Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses begins in a haze of buzzy guitars and suddenly launches into a huge anthemic chorus made for stadium fist-pumping. Yes, there wás a sombre, introspéctive sound tó this materiaI but U2 aIways knew a góod hook, and thése hooks ensured Radió Two play. In the wáy that David Bowié changed his musicaI output many timés, this change thát U2 underwent wás quite similarly notéworthy (although nowhere néar as regular ór different as Bowiés changes). They still did it, though, and it was a brave move from a group over ten years into their career. So Cruel is another slow number with a simply massive grinding bass underbeat and a yearning, song vocal from Bono, whose voice has become more characterful, less whiny, much fuller. A really dénse, muffled dance béat is on Thé Fly, which surprisingIy was a numbér one single. No real hook to it, just a crashing sonic attack like a shift in a sheet metal factory. She Moves ln Mysterious Ways hás an absolute kiIler scréechy but rhythmic intro ánd a sublime, upIifting catchy chorus. Now, I Iove heavy báss, but Tryin Tó Throw Yóur Arms Around Thé World has oné of the héaviest I have éver heard in á rock context.
